100% agree. I don't want the dark mode either, it's a hindrance.
"how to turn off dark mode ?", was basically my question as well, because of same issues seeing comments.

If when at a video and it's in Dark Mode, if you click on your Youtube account icon in the upper right, then click View Your Channel, then click the back button, that seems to remove the Dark Mode and still leave the controls to download. At least it's working for me currently.
